Tag Printing

Tagging Intro Video

Take tagging and compliance off your to do list.

A well-run farm requires good records, but government mandated tags are expensive, handwriting often unreadable, and logbooks are sometimes out of date or missing. By some estimates, over 20% of inventory is mistagged. Businesses not in compliance face fines and/or the loss of their license.

With our system harvest and dealer tags can be printed directly from an iPhone to a durable mobile printer on waterproof paper--all for less than the cost of buying pre-printed tags. An embedded QR code means all information on your tag can be passed seamlessly to dealers and buyers--saving time and reducing error rates.

All harvest information is recorded electronically: Making harvest reports, Vibrio logs and financial reporting a breeze.

Save Money

With an inexpensive mobile battery-powered printer, you can print compliant tags directly from your iPhone. Direct thermal printing, requires no ink. Even with the cost of the printer, paper and software, the average farmer will save over 30% on their tagging costs.

Better Records

Beyond the cost savings, farmers will now have a digital record of all their harvests to help with Vibrio compliance, accounting, filing state reports and general record keeping.

Better Dealer Relationships

Poor handwriting and/or record keeping leads to 50% of tracebacks failing. With printed tags that is no longer a problem. The embedded QR code, tags can be scanned by dealers, shippers and others who need to know the harvester information.  Dealers can also print out their own tags directly.

Reliable

The printer is water resistant and able to withstand a drop from 5 feet.  It runs for up to 30 hours of printing on a single charge. It never needs ink or toner. If it breaks, we’ll send you a loaner immediately while your printer is fixed or replaced.  The printer is covered under a 2 year warranty.

Designed For Shellfish

The custom specced polypro paper is designed for outdoor use. The tags are the regulation 3”x5” with a perforation and a hole punch for easy attachment to bags or boxes.  All the legal language and required fields are included in the software so you never have to worry--and if it changes, we’ll update it.

Easy to use

The software works on any iPhone and is designed to print tags efficiently.  All the information is stored locally and on the cloud. Exports of all harvests can be sent to any spreadsheet or database.

  • Why should I print shellfish tags?

Our solution makes it easy for farms to comply with state and federal regulations on tagging and record keeping.  From your iPhone and a TSC printer you can print out required shellfish tags, (both harvester and dealer tags) on waterproof paper and create log that allows you to submit information to state registries, track shipments, and cross check with your financial systems.

  • What is this replacing?

    Redundant painful paperwork.

Today, farms typically have pre-printed tags.  They then handwrite or overprint key information (date, destination, brand) on each tag. In addition, farms write the same information on their harvest log, enter it into their financial system and in most states submit it to state authorities every month.

A mid-size farm selling 600,000 oyster per year, will spend upwards of $2,400 on tagging and recordkeeping each year.

The costs and pain are substantial:

Tags:  A typical tag pre-printed will cost $131 for 1,000 tags ($.13/tag) plus shipping.  It will take 3 weeks to get them.

Completing tags: Filling in mostly-preprinted tags takes time. If an hourly worker making $20/hour can do 120 tags an hour the labor costs are $.17/tag.

Filling out log books and submitting paperwork to the state: An additional couple hours a month--more on larger farms.

Missed paperwork: Missing tags, incomplete harvest logs can lead to bad outcomes.  Ranging from fines or invoices that go unpaid.
  • What does this new solution cost?

Starter package: Printer, 10 rolls of paper, software, setup.  $699. Currently discounted to $499.  This is enough to print 1,750 tags.

Ongoing: We supply the paper and charge a flat rate for the paper and ongoing software support. The cost is $350/1,750 tags.  Currently discounted to $300/1,750.  That is $,17/tag.

There is no long term commitment and you only pay for what you use.

The printer is yours.  If you would like to supply your own paper we can figure out a solution, but so far we are able to provide paper a lot cheaper than anything publicly available.

  • Can I try it first?
Sign up for our starter package.  If it doesn’t work for you return the printer and the unused paper.  We will refund you the cost of the printer and any unused paper.
  • I shut down for the winter, will it cost me anything?
No.  You only pay when you are using the program.
  • I operate as a harvester and a dealer, can I print both tags?
Yes.  It is just a toggle to decide what type of tag to print.
  • Does this cover vibrio requirements?
Yes.  You can add it harvest time and icing time at harvest.
  • Does this cover wet storage requirements?
Yes.  In and out dates and location.
  • Can I use my own paper?

Yes, but we source the paper directly from the producer to get the right size, waterproof, and thermal.  We couldn't find anything else on the market that fit the needs of farms.

If you can, we are happy to get out of the paper business and just charge per print.

  • Does this include lot numbers?
Yes.  If you use them,  you can print them on your tags with our solution.
  • I added a new brand, now what?
You just go to your settings menu and add in the new brand.  Takes less than 10 seconds.
  • Does this cover species other than oysters?
Yes.  Any shellfish tag can be printed.
  • Can I changed the required warning text?
Yes.  You can update the tagging information within the app.
  • Does the state or FDA approve these tags?
We have checked with various state authorities and the FDA and ensured that the tags are compliant with all regulations and can be used. We have also read the 490 page Model Ordinance to make sure we comply with all their requirements.
  • Does it work on Android?
No.  Its optimized for iPhone, but can be used on an iPad as well.
  • Why did you choose TSC printers?

We tested a number of mobile printers and  the TSC mobile printer was the best.

This printer runs on batteries for two days, can be dropped from 5 feet, is splash resistant, and carries a two year warranty. It is also substantially less expensive than competitors.

  • Can I use a different printer?
Not at this point.  We want this to be as bulletproof as possible. Reducing the variables like different printers makes a big difference in overall product quality.
  • Do I need to buy ink for the printer?
No.  This is a thermal printer.  No ink needed.
  • Is the paper special?

We're supplying archival type paper that will withstand wet environments, not tear, and be easy to use.

The paper is a Tyvek-like material that is perforated into tags that are regulation size. We also include a hole punch to make it easy to attach.

  • Why does the tag have a QR code?
All the tag information--and more--is embedded in that code.  For distributors this means they can scan in your information easily and quickly.  For end consumers, they will be able to learn more about your farm.
